Alex 1st teams in top form against VP

The Alexander Road High School first teams performed well against their VP counterparts, as the two schools met in the annual derby fixture at Alex fields on Saturday.

Alex were in top form in the hockey fixtures. The Alex girls’ 1st team won their match four goals to nil, while the Alex boys’ 1st team also triumphed with a polished performance on the day.

VP capitalised on early mistakes by Alex in the boys’ 1st team soccer fixture, as VP walked away with a 3 – 0 win. In the other boys’ matches, the Alex under 16 team beat VP by two goals to nil, while the under 14 match was closely contested. Alex were the eventual winners (1 – 0). VP claimed a 3 – 0 victory in the under 15 soccer clash.

In the early soccer matches on Saturday, VP kept the Alex Girls’ 1st soccer team at bay for most of the game, but a late goal by Alex secured a 1 – 0 win for the home side. Alex’s 2nd girls side finished their match as the eventual 2 – 0 winners.

The netball matches were close and entertaining to watch. Alex’s under 18 team succeeded by playing a fast and accurate passing game, as they ended their match with a solid win (27 – 10). Although the Alex’s under 16 team had a good game, VP’s under 16A side showed better character, beating Alex in a close 8 – 6 victory. The under 14A match was a nail-biting affair. With great teamwork and dedication, Alex caught up on a two goal difference in the second half and in the last minute they pushed through for the winning goal (8 – 7).

The rugby matches were also evenly played out. The Alex 1st team finished the derby with a 33 - 15 win. The two fairly even-matched under 16 sides played well, however, VP took the game with a try in the last few minutes, beating Alex under 16 by eight points to five. VP’s under 15 rugby team also won their match (14 – 12), while Alex’s under 14 team stuck to a set game plan and showed good discipline in the first half as they secured a well-deserved win.
