Alex and VP face-off for the final time this season

Zoe Maree

On Friday and Saturday 24 and 25 August, Alexander Road High School and Victoria Park High School faced each other for the last time in the 2018 winter season.

On the Alex Astro-Turf, Alex was the dominant force, winning all but one of their games. A notable performance was Chad Muller for the boys’ first hockey team, who scored 5 out of Alex’s 10 goals in that match. The first and second team girls continuously denied VP’s attempts at goal and both matches ended with Alex being the only team on the scoreboard.

The soccer matches were more of an even affair with two wins, two losses and two draws for either side. The girls’ first and the boys’ u15 teams drew. Amber Botha scored both 1st team goals on either side of the halves. Alex was awarded a penalty early in second half but squandered a 2 goal lead and VP replied with 2 long range efforts to level the match at 2 - 2. The girls’ second team fared better as they recorded another win this week in a polished display of football. Kelly Ann Searle and McKenna Bouwer were the goal scorers as Alex beat VP by 2 goals to nil. The Alex second boys won 1-0, thanks to the goal by Sachin Morris. The first boys lost 1 – 0 in a close encounter. The only goal came from a harmless shot going wide which was cruelly, unintentionally deflected into the goal by an Alex defender from outside the box.

The Alex juniors made a good showing on the rugby field. The u14 side won by 25 points. The u15s had a great performance and scored a try in the last minute to win their game. The boys adapted well considering their team was missing key players as a result of injuries and illness, but they still pulled out on top. The u16 side also pulled off a 3-point victory.

The netball girls kept things very entertaining with close results in all the games. Alex won all but the 1st team match, where VP pipped them to the post by 3 points, and the u14 game, which was a draw. In the u14 game, Alex showed great team cohesion. Considering the other four matches went Alex’s way, the players end this season on a well-deserved high.

As always, the VP/Alex derbies are much anticipated and well-attended events. It is a joy to see young people come together in the name of healthy competition and school pride.
