Cinderella Runs Away With The Awards

The Woodlands Dairy Showtime Awards took place at the Pemads’ Little Theatre on Wednesday, 29 January. Alexander Road High School’s production of Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella walked away with a slew of accolades.
In the production awards category, the show won High School Show of the Year, Best Director (Mr Greg Everard), Best Vocal Direction (Ms Deborah Everard and Mr Dario Broccardo), Best Costumes (Ms Lizette Felix and her team), Best Casting of a Production, Best Brochure Design (Ms Helana Bright), Best Contribution to Dance (Ms Chireen Ferreira) and Best Choreographed Number (Ms Chireen Ferreira).
The onstage crew received equal recognition with Rachael Saunders walking away with awards for both Best Vocalist and Best Actress in a Musical. The supporting acts proved just as impressive with Nathan van As (Best Supporting Actor in a Musical) and Sivuyisiwe Wani (Best Supporting Actress in a Musical) took top billing in their respective categories. Christopher Cressey’s performance in ‘The Prince is giving a ball’ earned him the title of Best Leading Ensemble Member in a Musical.
But the honours did not stop there. The following evening, several Alex staff members attended the Showtime awards for local and professional productions. Mr Greg Everard and Mr Dario Broccardo both formed part of the creative team for the Gilbert & Sullivan Society’s 2019 production of The Sound of Music. Mr Everard was awarded the trophy for Best Director of a Musical and Mr Broccardo received the trophy for Best Musical Direction. He was jointly awarded the trophy for Best Vocal Direction, which he had also received for his work on the school production of Cinderella at the High School Awards. Mr Everard was given a Special Achievement Award for tenacity and determination in bringing this particular production of The Sound of Music to Port Elizabeth audiences.
Alex was again acknowledged by the local theatre fraternity for their contribution to the technical aspects of set building and backstage at a local theatre level. The production garnered many awards at the event, including Show of the Year. Mrs Deborah Everard was also inducted as a member of the Port Elizabeth Showtime Hall of Fame for her contribution to Music, Musical Theatre and Music Education in Nelson Mandela Bay.
