Alex celebrates thriving strings community

The annual Strings Festival took place on Sunday, 27 July at Grey High School’s newly opened Bergman Auditorium, offering a remarkable celebration of Port Elizabeth’s thriving strings community. This large-scale event featured 12 ensembles from across the city, including groups from junior schools, high schools, and universities, all coming together to share their passion for music.
A notable highlight was Alexander Road High School’s first festival performance under the direction of their new conductor, Mr. Neal Green. Their performance was well-received and marked a promising new chapter for the ensemble.
The evening culminated in a stirring mass performance, where over 150 string players filled the stage to perform a medley of popular South African songs. The finale brought together students of all ages, showcasing not just musical skill, but a deep sense of community and collaboration.
More than just a concert, the event highlighted the strength and unity of the city’s musical landscape. Alexander Road High School, along with all participating groups, can be proud to be part of such a dynamic and growing tradition.
