Alexans Conquer the World Scholar’s Cup

Ws Cup

Alexander Road High School entered two teams into the Port Elizabeth round of the internationally renowned World Scholar’s Cup, held at St Marks School this past weekend. Both the senior and junior teams did extremely well and both qualified for an invitation to the 2020 global rounds of the competition.

The senior team, consisting of Busisiwe Chimaliro, Evagelos Batsis and Kaylee Baron, came first in the Scholar’s Bowl and third overall. Kaylee topped the creative writing section and Busisiwe came second, putting the senior team collectively in first place for the creative writing division. Evangelos received two silver medals for his performance in the individual quiz section.

Dilyn-Mae Sauls also qualified to speak in the showcase debate and was joined, on the opposing team, by Kaylee Baron. Evangelos Batsis was selected to be part of the scholar’s adjudication panel for this debate.

Each participant received their own ‘Reggy’, a fluffy alpaca who is the mascot of the tournament. Aside from academic challenges, the scholars also had the opportunity to take part in the talent show at the closing ceremony. It was wonderful weekend of friendly competition and collegiality for the participating schools and we look forward to the 2020 World Scholar’s Cup season.
